The film “Threads” puts all of this in perspective. Which is to say, it’s a bureaucratic wet dream. Orwell could not have satirized nuclear war more effectively.

when i was a kid, i was exploring a tiny stream on our land, in nov-dec, and my hands were immersed in the cold water for a length of time. at some point i lost all dexterity in my hands and ran back home. i got to the door and could not operate the doorknob, even with both hands i failed to open the door. it was a learning experience.

What a fantasy this was! it's a darned good thing the nuclear bombs did not fall at this time. Contrast this efficient, completely-in-control and without interference from a bomb on THEM, with the much more realistic scene from the British films "Threads" twenty years later.

How much has been spent on weapons that will never be used? Who profits? We are nothing but pawns to the Royal Bloodlines. Every single one of them is toast after this life.

During my 27 years in the RAF, for some of that time, I was a Shelter Marshal in a nuclear bunker in Germany. Believe me, all exercises we took for real. When I was in a bunker in the UK or Germany, when those bomber or fighter plane engines started up, you never knew if you would hear the jets going down the runways or not. Prayer was the order of the day! After retiring from the RAF, I also, was a member of the Royal Observer Corps for several years and we also took every alert for real. Although the ROC is disbanded, the small monitoring stations (Holes in the ground throughout the UK) are still in place but most are waterlogged now. They did serve their purpose during the Cold War but in these days of only 2-3 minutes warning of an incoming strike, what's the purpose of them? Whatever plans the civilians think our government has in that type of emergency, think again! If you want an adequate defence then allow your government to increase taxation to pay for it. Of course, you could all just sit there with your head in the sand and think that it's never going to happen, especially to you!

I watched Threads and nuclear war looked hopelessly grim. Then I watched this and it all seemed a jolly lark and we'd all pop the kettle on afterwards for a cuppa. I know which one of the two is more accurate, unfortunately... 💀💀💀

In the film, Johnny the dog belongs to his squeeze, the doctor (Bill Traver's real life wife Virginia McKenna). Always my favourite film, and I'm now 64.

An interesting look at how the world once viewed Nuclear War, in a naive innocent fashion, the reality of this type of situation is considerably less forgiving, with it being doubtful that the UK would even exist after such an nuclear attack....................
